Week 30, Argentina
26/12
Rose at 8.00, grumpy coz the Oasis anti socials had kept me awake for the 2nd night in a row.
If ever you decide to do an overlanding trip... don't choose for Oasis, unless you like to be drunk, obnoxious and anti social when you see the world. You are being ripped off wrt prices too btw.
Ok, new day! Breakfasted , packed my stuff, got money from the ATM (yay!) and at 10.00 we were on our way to El Bolson.
Arrived here at 14.00, unpacked the truck and setup kitchen, setup tent. Waiting now for Richard (who is washing some cloths) to explore this little town. We will be here for 2 nights. Laterz...
Environment is nice, look ...
Having a beer on a terrace with Richard now ...
Dinner was nice, played a little guitar, sipped a bit of wine, tried an episode of Torchwood, but was too tired to complete it, so... slept for 10 (!) hours.
27/12
Rose at 8.00, breakfasted, did the media, washed my clothes, shopped for the two upcoming days (long drives through the south of Patagonia).
Hiked to the Rio Azul Balcony (blue river viewpoint), nice views indeed, look...
Back in town: a coke and a beer.
PS: pet a dog on the head in the centre of town and ever since he followed me. I named him "Woof" (so that he would be the only dog that could pronounce his own name). Wouldn't leave my side, so took him to the campsite. Everybody loved him, and so did i. Wish i could take him with me ... sorry no pics.
Now back at the campsite... put away my laundry ... rain is coming and we leave at 6.00 tomorrow ... wet tent to be packed... oh well...
BTW: my tent is 20 years old. Zippers are broken, it's not waterproof anymore , so i will leave it behind here in South America. Still, feels like letting an old friend down. It has been with me 3 times around the world, on oily ship decks, deserts, rocks, tarmac, mud, grass, sand, you name it...
Went to my tent at 8.30 , finished last nights episode of Torchwood and skept like a baby.
28/12
Rose at 4.40, immediately welcomed by Woof. Packed (tent was dry!), breakfasted, packed the truck, said goodbye to Woof (sob ... 😢)... when we left he wouldn't stop barking (and of course i thinks it's about me!)
Long day of driving ahead. Loved the vastness of the pampa though. Endless emptiness... gives me a good feel for some reason. Here's a picture...
At 18.30 we arived in Perito Moreno. We were supposed to wildcamp but it was too windy for the sissies, so ... went to a campsite and even a cabine! Luxury!
Small meeting at 7.00 , then to the supermercado for a beer and now updating blog back at the campsite. Laterz...
Dinner was great.
Everybody is a bit excited. Must be the storm , we're in i guess. Anyway ... see you tomorrow.
29/12
Rose at 4.45 again. Another long drive ahead. The pampas are really empty. This is the least populated area of the world! I still think its beautifull though ... look at this...
There are even hardly any birds to be seen. A lama every now and then and some ostrich like birds and... an armadillo ....
It wouldn't show it's head...
At 17.30 we arrived at our campspot. Windy, very windy and so the tourists upgraded to a comfortable cabin. What's new?
We had Norms chicken curry in the cold wind and after dinner we found the warmth of the campsites meeting place, where we had beer and wine. After i warmed up i went to my tent and slept for 10 (!!) hours despite the storm.
30/12
Slept in till 8.30. Breakfasted, toiletted.
At 9.30 Hugo, Anna (new, italy), Sharron, Dario and I took of for a hike to lago Capri and mirador (= viewpoint) Fitz Roy... a 16 K walk with splendid views. Look...
Came back at 14.30 or so, did my shoppings for new years eve, drank a nice IPA at the bar next door (where a heared a very nice singer/guitarplayer rehearse (check that out tonight!)).
Took a shower, shaved and chatted with this nice dutch couple, who were traveling here for half a year. Laterz...
There was some german food (bratwurst und kartoffeln). Went to the bar next door to see the singer, but it took forever before she started, so... a good conversation with Russ instead. When finally began to sing i took the last sip of my beer and so i left.
Hate those commercial tricks, that force you to consume more than you want...
Slept good, despite the howling wind.
31/12
Rose at 7.45, breakfast and a short trip to El Catafe. On the way we visited an small historic place where famous people had sought shelter. Among them the criminals Butt Cassidy and the Sundance Kid...
Arrived in our hostel at 13.00. Unpacked, wifi is good (so communicated a little with Mariya and other friends). Then a short walk into the center of this town (met the dutch couple again). Cosy, nice, but touristic place. Back at the hostel, i updated this blog. Laterz...
Sipping wine now.... Laterz...
Did not do the fancy 30,- dinner, but just had a simple meal with Hugo, Sharon and Dario. Bijan and Russ came over from the restaurant regularly apparently because they had more fun here.
New year is not such a big party as in Holland so i was in bed relatively early and slept well into the new year.
01/01 Happy new year everybody!
Rose at 8.00, showered, had a little (leftover) breakfast. Wifi-ed (untill that broke down).
Went into town, found a working ATM and a nice italian restaurant with good wifi and coffee. Chatted with Mariya and Mathanja, bought a sandwich and a soda. Back in the hostel now ... Laterz...
The afternoon i spend walking in the lake area (Lake Argentina and 2 more (forgot the names)). Beautiful environment. Reminded me of Schiermonnikoog (little dutch island in the north of the Netherlands)...
Walked there for 2 hours or so. Loved it!
Updating blog now... Laterz...
Back at the hostel, i bought some drinks and food at the nearby convenient store.
Answered to all the new years wishes, read the news, downloaded season 4 of Torchwood, ate bread and salami, had a glass of wine with Margarita. An episode of Torchwood completed the day. Slept good.
See you next week...
