Week 10, Mexico
8/8
Woke up at 7.00 after a good night sleep, whitout runing to the toilet. Had a nice breakfast in the hostel, updated blog and now... gonna get me a pair of shorts!!! Laterz.
Took ages before i found a pair, but i got 'em. Spend the rest of the day strolling through the city. It is realy beautiful ... have a look ...
There are demonstrations too.
Lots of police men in the street...
Now back in the hostel, with a beer to publish week 9 of my blog. Laterz...
Went for a bar and live music back. Ran into Karim. He took me to another bar, where we met Zaine, Annette and Norm. Another beer, then i called it a day.
Said goodbye to Zane. He was, more or less, the cookgroup leader. Great guy, though a bit hard to understand (for a dutchman). Think (and hope) he will be back in Ecuador or so.
Stomac is still weak, though improving. Episode of fringe in my room and a good sleep.
9/8
Rose at 7.30, showered, breakfasted, did the media and now off to town to do a bus tour. Laterz...
Bustour was really nice. Lasted for more than 3 hours. Man, what a beautiful city this is.. .
Again there were demonstrations. The color was whirte this time (yesterday it was green). 2 parties?
Anyway, after the bustour a little snack (delicious beef broth) and a huge latte coffee (which is not smart if you're recovering from stomac problems ... run to the toilet ... getting fed up with it).
Back in the hostel now... must eat carefully. Think Jan!!
At 7 Luts, Bijan and I went for our last diner in the city.
There was live music. Horrible live music. Nevertheles the pasta was nice....
Had a last beer at the hostel, episode of fringe and a short night of sleep, because we have to go back to the truck tomorrow.
10/8
Last night: rain, rain and more rain. The side effects of a Tornado, pasing us by in the south. And the forecast is not good either. So, we went back to the truck (by Uber (really great international taxi organization)) to find the truck, still being repaired.
Waiting now in shitty weather. We may have to spend an extra night here as well. Not looking forward to that, but hey ... such is the life of a traveler i guess... Laterz...
Luts, Bijan and i spend the day the best we could. We bought some chicken for the workers (spring of the truck had to be replaced), went to a small museum (where we got a personal tour of the director), went to the local market, etc.
Then great idea: Will moved the trucked so that a dry spot on the ground came free. We put up the tarpaulin over the dry ground and put up our tents up there. So, we had a relatively dry sleeping place.
Had diner in "El Balcon" and an early, but very good sleep.
11/8
Rose at 6.00, broke down tents and sleeping gear, put up kitchen, breakfasted and ... waiting for the last tent to be broken down well ... you know...
PS: Digesting system seems to be working fairly normal again... fingers crossed. Laterz...
Long drive through the Mexican green mountains. ..
We wanted to go to a campground, but it turned out to be a dirty place, so... cheap hotel in the nice town of Oaxaca.
Luts, Bijan and i went for dinner to a local bar restaurant, where the rest of the group was too. Chicken wings it was. Loads of them. Delicious .... oh yeah, some beers too...
a lot actually... slept good 😉.
12/8
Woke up at ... 8 or so. Hungover!
Took me hour to get ready for the walk to the old center of town, with Richard, a new traveler, who is part of the group since a couple of days. Nice bloke. Reminds me of Tommy Cooper. Same humor, same fast mumbling speech. You will hear from him i guess.
And so, we walked... had coffee and french bread on the way, bought some new cloths at the Wal-Mart, and arrived at the old part of town around 12. It was a 8 K walk. Beautiful, and ancient architecture ... look ....
Round 3 PM we walked back, via an other route. Had some beautiful seafood, just before we came back. All in all a nice day, to recover from a few beers to much. Will sleep early tonight. Laterz...
An early night it was, though spend few hours watching documentaries about Led Zeppelin (my all time favorite rockband). Slept good after that (except for being woken up at 4 by a mexican musicgroup).
13/8
Rose at 6.30, Bijan bought me a breakfast yoghurt (thanks dude), packed.
Waiting in the lobby of this crappy hotel now for the others. Planned to leave at 8.00.
A long drive it was with only 2 short stops. Great scenery though. Its hard to believe how green Mexico is. All the ideas about a dangerous, desert-like country are wrong.
We found a camping spot close to Albino Angel Curso.
Will ordered a meal (although i had already eaten) and some beers. Slept well.
PS: S was supposed to be in our cookgroup, but she transferred. Reason: i gave her "a look".... She is a so weird...
14/8
Rose at 6.30, packed, breakfasted and now off for a boat trip to s canyon. Lets see.
The boat trip was amazing. Take a look ...
Now on the truck again to San Christobal de las Casas. See you there...
In San Cristobal it happened: I was suposed to do cookgroup. Again! For the third time in a row. It was just a coincidence of planning, but it really was too much. Especially since there are other cookgroups who get away with just 1 breakfast per week, not even have to cook an egg. Just too unfair, so i complained. Loudly!
Thank God, my good friend Bijan offered his asistance and with the help of newcomer Richard we managed to do the shopping and the cooking. German Dan just ran of, not showing his face again until diner was ready. Ashole!
Will also agreed that this shouldn't have happened. I have decided not to let it happen again. If it happens again i am going to be anti social too and just never help anybody out again and some other measures as well. Lets hope it does not come to that. Got it of my chest now (more or less) but will have an final talk with Laura and Will about some other stuff too (people that just show up for cookgroup, never help setting up kitchen, get drunk and don't show up for diner, etc). We need to become more social (there are some really good people too, this does not apply to them abviously). Well, enough of this...
The rest of the afternoon was nice though. Went to town (it's a lovely, colorful, typical Mexican town), had a nice lunch , did the shopping, and came back by taxi.
Setup kitchen and cooked a great meal for everybody who did not stay in town. Guitar and a good glass of wine afterwards and a good night of sleep (slept in, so that Richard and Bijan did breakfast (*blush*)).
See you next week...
