Week 11, Mexico, Belize

15/8

Woke up at 8. Too late to serve breakfast, but Richard and Bijan had taken care of that. Thanks guys.
Great hot shower, took al my dirty clothes to the laundrette and went to the market in town again. Nice coffee, nice lunch and .... a hel of a lot of rain. It kept on down pouring (and it still does).

Nevertheless nice day so far... Laterz...
Didn't do much for the rest of the day. Helped cookgroup a little, sipped a beer and went to bed early. Managed to keep it dry, at least in my sleeping bag. Slept reasonably well, despite the rain, that kept on pooring down untill 4 am.

16/8

Rose at 6.30, breakfasted, packed, collected laundry, and a long drive on the truck ahead now. Direction: Cancun.

The scenery is so fantastic in Mexico. Green moutains as far as you can see... look...

At 4 am we called it a day. Found a nice campingspot near some waterfalls, where we had a fantastic swim.

Bijan became sick. It looked quit bad and it worries me. He didn't want any help or assistance ,  so...

Now waiting for diner (wonder who shows up and who stays behind in the bar, getting pissed...)

Almost everybody showed up. To eat and... back to the bar. I went there too for two beers. After that i went to my net for an episode of fringe and an early night. Slept well.

17/8

Rose at 6.30 or so. Luckily Bijan was (a lot) better. We took off at 8, to visit the ruines of Palenque. Old Maya ruines.

Nice to see and a very nice route back, along a jungle path with Richard.

Had a coke and at 13.00 h the truck continued his way to Cancun. 1 night of wildcamping ahead of us. Then... look...

So, we went on, to find a wildcamp place and then it showered again.... We ate under the tarpoline an improvised meal.

It kept on pouring though until now... (20.40). It may be too wet and dark to put up tents anyway. Lets check that out... laterz...

Well, managed to put my tent up, being eaten by mosquitos. Wet it was though. Humid from rain and sweat. Not the most pleasant circumstances to sleep in, but i got a few hours. Tent is really smelly now. Needs a good wash in Cancun. Im one of the few campers. The rest upgrades to hotels.

18/8

Rose at 6.00, breakfasted, broke up kitchen and tarpoline, packed and the last 500 K to Cancun are ahead of us. See you there soon hopefully.

But first we visited the "pyramids" of Chichen Itza... nice, but i already knew most of it... we got a guide too. Unnecessary i must say, but hey...  Here's some pics...

At 13.00 we set off for Cancun, where we arrived around lake 18.00. We put up tents, cooked, and had a confrontation with Dan, a german guy who always buggers off when he has cookgroup duty. Bijan really had a few err... "words" with him (which represented the thoughts of most of us) and i think... well, lets see how it goes. Will needs to speak with him and he will.

After diner (made by Lauretta, so high quality italian food), we walked in the direction of town to find a bar. We found one, drank 2 beers and got ripped of for 60 pesos per beer (almost as expensive as in Holland 😊).

I had a last one with Norm, at the camp site. Slept well in a warm tent.

19/8

Rose at 7 -ish, to help Luts, setup breakfast. We had a good conversation with Will about cookgroup related isues. Relaxing way to start the day. Im off for a long walk along the beaches. See who comes with me... Laterz...

And so ... alone i went to the public beach, just a 2 K walk, but it was very nice: some shadey spots, a very nice restaurant withgood seafood and excellent wifi (going to publish blog there i think),  cold beers and on top of that all: a very good reggae band, that played from 4.30 to... 7.00.

Was home late as you can imagine...

At the campground i showered, washed, shaved and had a small bite for diner (yesterdays leftovers, which Bijan had kept cold in his eski). Shopped for water in the store nearby. Have a last beer now and then another warm night i think.

PS: got severly sunburned. Im glowing all over.

20/8

Rose at 7.30 or so. Met the new driver Johno from Australia. Nice bloke. Round 9 i went to the beach. Crowded, since it was Sunday. So, walked on to find a nice place for coffee and breakfast. To the Oxxo for another coffee, then back to the restaurant at the beachm where i managed to publish week 10 of my blog (good wifi up there). Rest of the afternoon swimming and sipping a beer . Ate fish at a restaurant on the way home. Take a shower now and will sleep early i guess. Laterz...

21/8

Rose at 6.30, improvised breakfast, packed and on the way to the Belize border. A visit to the ruines of Tulum. I did not visit the ruines, since i ran out of pesos. Just walked up to the beach and back. Then had an ice cream and Ken bought me a lemonade. Thanks Ken.

Crossed the border at 17.00 h or so. Took an hour. Now we are in the rain (for a change) in Belize... supposed to wildcamp, but the weather is horrible, so ....

lets see what happens. Laterz...

Then a beautiful sunset ...

Some conclusions about Mexico:

Before we got here my idea of Mexico was: a desert like environment, thiefs all over, hot and dirty and everyone would try to rip you off all the time.
Man, was i wrong! Where did this idea come from? The media?

Mexico is great. Its green, its not hot everywhere (due to altitude), people are honest, not riping you off at all. Their english is poor, and so is my spanish, but a beautifull smile makes up for that easily.
I say: i love Mexico and its people. Tronald Dumb and your wall... you suck! Big time!

See you all next week...
